VASE LIFE FOR CUT FLOWERS
I love growing sustainable cut flowers! And I want you to get the most out of our flowers. Here are some tips to help make your cut flowers last as long as possible:
~ Think about this first: bacteria is the #1 enemy in shortening vase life. So anything you can do to minimize bacteria will prolong the life of your cut flowers.
+ NO LEAVES SHOULD BE IN THE WATER. Decaying leaves will promote bacteria. Strip off any leaves that might be in the water.
+ MINIMIZE YOUR WATER. Having less water in the container means less bacteria, both on the stems and in the water. HOWEVER, the open stems NEED to have water. Don’t let the water dry up.
+ CHANGE THE WATER DAILY OR EVERY OTHER DAY. Don’t ADD water; CHANGE it. Again, this will get rid of bacteria. Sanitize vase if needed.
+ CUT THE STEMS AT AN ANGLE. Cutting at an angle gives more surface area for water to enter. Also, plants naturally try to self-heal, naturally closing cut areas. Re-cutting the stems after 2-3 days may help water intake.
